Mallorca Vacation

I surprised Camille with a surprise 40th birthday gift - a cycling camp in Mallorca. While few of you have seen her on a bike, she is a very strong rider. Perhaps a cycling camp sounds like a selfish gift, but in fact it was exactly the type of vacations we used to take together BC. Camille's cousin was gracious enough to watch our 3 kids for April school vacation, we hired someone to watch the dog and chickens and off we went - just like the days of yore.

Our vacation had a rocky start. Our flight from Providence to Newark was cancelled and we missed our overseas flight that day. We had to wait another 48 hours before we finally left the country. Naturally, we were disappointed to have spent two days in the Newark when we could have been on the Mallorcan beaches. However, once we arrived all the anxiety of a stressful journey melted away and we quickly settled into vacation mode.

We stayed at the Stephen Roche cycling camp in Palmanova, a small seaside town about 15 km southwest of the city of Palma. The Ponent Mar hotel was comfortable, clean and simple. The cycling staff and many of the guests are French; Stephen lived in France for many years and his first wife is French. Other guests were Canadian, Swiss and British. We rented bikes from the camp. They were sufficient for our use and it was very convenient not having to pack, ship and haul 2 machines overseas. We did bring our own saddles for that "homey" feel. We did not bring helmets with us and used the camp's. If I were to go again, we would have brought our own helmets.

We took part in 3 camp rides ranging in distance from 80 - 95 kms. In each case the first 10k was a bit hectic leaving town through the many roundabouts and dodging traffic. However, once we reached the more rural areas the riding was superb. Great road surfaces, varied terrain and spectacular ocean views. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of climbing on the island. The weather was perfect every day and the temps ranged from around 60F at the start to about 80F mid afternoon. For us, each "stage" was a perfect length. Long enough to feel like a cycling camp, but not too long as to leave you completely drained of energy at the end of the ride. We typically finished up around 1pm, showered and still had plenty of time for local sightseeing, shopping and eating. I should also add that, while Camille has not spent any significant time on her bike in ten years, she was in the "A" group or as the Swiss gang called her: the Swiss Madame.

At last, our truncated holiday came to an end. It was a short but very enjoyable stay. A great escape that gave us an opportunity to relive some of the adventures that formed the foundation of our relationship. Great marriage therapy. We can't wait to plan our next trip.

Friday am ride

I'm planning a long, casual ride ride Friday 'round the Holliston loop starting at 5:45 and the usual spot. Good base building on a very scenic route. I think it is about 40 miles or so that will get you back home around 8am. I'm hoping to try and work these in as many Fridays as possible. Everyone is welcome - no dropped riders, I promise!

Landry's Party

Eric-
Give-aways are a great idea. Buy some raffle tickets and hand them out, draw numbers from a hat at some point in the night.
Special guest or speaker would also be great. Mark McCormack, Jonathan Page, etc.
Good luck!

Jon Page 2nd at World 'Cross Championiships

I should also mention that Katie Compton and Danny Summerhill both silvered as well. I watched the race Sunday night on www.WCSN.com. The announcers are terrible but the race was one of the most exciting bike races I've ever seen! The Belgian contingent of Wellens, Vervecken and Nys put the hammer down at the start of the race but this race course was possessed by demons. I think all of the top riders went down hard at least one. Nys had three super hard falls and finished 11th. You have to give this guy credit - any other mortal human would have tucked tail and headed for the showers by the second crash. Page rode out of his mind. He damn near won the whole thing execept for one small bobble with about .5 k to go and Vervecken got a small gap - race over. You have to check out pictures of this course. Super technical with thick mud, sand, steep climbs and tons of stairs!.

Hydration and Nutrition

I posted this on the Spynergy Newsletter this week. The Hammer nutrition website does have some good info on it about this.

... we want to make sure that everyone is properly hydrated during our spin classes, especially the longer classes. You can however over hydrate, which can lead to a dilution of your body’s electrolyte levels. This is not good.

Typically athletes strive to replace the fluids, electrolytes, and calories they can re-absorb, not what they lose. So that means that most workouts when you’re sweating a lot, you might drink up to one 24oz (standard bike water bottle) of water or sports drink per hour of exercise and take in 200-300 calories per hour for workouts over an hour. Consuming calories during a workout of an hour or less usually isn’t necessary (unless you’re really hungry).

Please be careful to make sure you drink enough water each day. But it’s as important to make sure you don’t drink too much plain water during your work-outs.

If you’d like to learn more, please go to the attached article where you will also find other useful workout nutrition advice. http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=ARTICLE&ARTICLE.ID=1273&OMI=10090,10071&AMI=10090&RETURN_URL=%2Fza%2FECP%3FPAGE%3DENDURANCE_LIBRARY%26OMI%3D10090%2C10071%26AMI%3D10090&RETURN_TEXT=Endurance%20Library

As always, if you have any questions about exercise and nutrition, we strongly advise to seek medical consultation. Everyone is different and not all ‘rules of thumb’ will apply to you. Whenever making changes to your regimen, always do so slowly, carefully, and under the direction of your doctor. Really.
